Some drivers in Saskatoon who started the new year with a parking ticket on their windshield are getting a break from the city.
It comes after a number of people thought Monday was a statutory holiday and were not required to pay for parking.
The city first responded to Twitter complaints about the tickets saying holiday services were posted before Christmas, and that payment wasn’t required for Dec. 26 only.
On Wednesday, however, the city announced its cancelling parking tickets issued Jan. 2 – and refunding all paid parking transactions on that day.
Keen drivers who already paid for their parking violation will also be refunded.
Those who paid with credit card will have the transaction reversed, while cash refunds will be available at city hall beginning Monday, Jan. 9.
Since receipts are optional at city parking stations, they will not be required for the refund process.
Andrew Hildebrandt, director of community standards, said Monday was a “typical day for ticketing” – which averages 350 parking violations in Saskatoon.
