For those with a sweet tooth, the COVID-19 pandemic won’t be getting in the way of a box of Girl Guide cookies.
The girls are being advised to practise social distancing, which means no door-to-door selling, and no selling in person.
“Since we realized those were no longer going to be options, we decided to reach out to businesses to see if anybody had capacity to support us and it’s been an overwhelming response across Canada,” said provincial commissioner Christa Morhart.
A few businesses have stepped up to ensure the cookies, which have been sold since 1927, continue to make their way into the hands of those who support the organization.
“Girl Guides give back to their communities on a very regular basis, with volunteering at seniors homes (or) the Humane Society. We do our Clean Up Saskatchewan every year where we go and clean public parks and campgrounds,” Morhart said.
“The girls just give back in so many ways, I think the businesses just felt it was an excellent opportunity to return that favour and give back to the girls.”
London Drugs, Save on Foods and Canadian Tire have bought their supply and will be selling them to the public. That’s more than 10,000 cases made available safely.
The cookies arrived in Saskatoon and Regina on Friday.
“All of the monies are being directed straight back to Girl Guides, so when the girls are able to resume activities, their fun, engaging adventures will still be supported for them,” Morhart said.
