Amid fears of quarantine, many have swiped up toilet paper across Canada, which includes some stores in Saskatoon.
Although toilet paper is essential, Saskatoon’s director of emergency management services, Pam Goulden-McLeod, says it’s not the only thing you should be stockpiling.
Goulden-McLeod said Tuesday that “everyone should have a plan in place,” and it should include “more than just toilet paper.”
She said water is a must, along with non-perishable food items.
“You want to have food that won’t spoil — things like canned food, energy bars, dried foods,” she said. “(Those are) the things that can give you the energy, but you don’t have to worry if your fridge isn’t working in the summertime.”
She said although the concerns are high right now with fears of the COVID-19 spread, an emergency preparedness kit should be essential year-round.
When it comes to essential medication, Goulden-McLeod said it’s important to get copies of what you or your family members take.
“A lot of people just go to the pharmacy and fill your medications, but they couldn’t tell you what medication you’re on,” she said.
Having an emergency plan is also essential, Goulden-McLeod said. The plan also should outline people who you can go to if you need help in an emergency situation.
“Building those social relationships and connections, we don’t traditionally think (of them),” she said. “They don’t go in a blue bin in our basement, but they’re part of our emergency plan.”
On Tuesday at a media conference at Saskatoon city hall, Saskatchewan Health Authority medical health officer Dr. Johnmark Opondo recommended having three people to call upon if an emergency arises.
“Get at least three buddies, and just say, ‘(Can) we be in touch if I need help?’ ” Opondo said.
Additional supplies that are good to have according to Goulden-McLeod include battery- or crank-powered flashlights and radios, a first aid kit, sleeping bags, blankets and hand sanitizer.
She said the city does have resources on its website that residents can use to build their emergency kits. That can be found here.
