A melee at the end of Tuesday’s WHL game between the Regina Pats and Moose Jaw Warriors has resulted in suspensions to four players and fines to the teams.
Carter Chorney of the Pats and Nolan Jones of the Warriors each got three-game suspensions for receiving fighting majors and game misconducts after the game ended.
Moose Jaw’s Daemon Hunt, who was given a fighting major and 10-minute misconduct after the buzzer, was handed a two-game ban for what the league called his “actions at end of game.”
Regina’s Robbie Holmes got a four-game suspension for what the league called his “actions at end of game and repeat offender.” Last week, he had received a two-game ban from the league for a checking-to-the-head major he was assessed Feb. 22 against the Edmonton Oil Kings.
On Tuesday, Holmes earned an instigator minor, a fighting major and two game misconducts (one for leaving the bench) after the game had ended.
The Warriors were fined $2,000 and the Pats were fined $1,500.
The incident started after Regina’s 7-4 victory as the Pats took to the ice to congratulate rookie goalie Spencer Welke on his first career WHL win.
According to reports, Holmes went to retrieve the puck to present it to Welke, but Hunt picked up the puck and threw it over the glass. That precipitated a fight between the two and the incident escalated.
Chorney and Holmes each will miss his first game Friday, when the Pats are to face the Blades in Saskatoon.
Spencer Welke wins in his @TheWHL Debut. Annnnnnnd a missing puck leads to more rough stuff after the final buzzer!
