Putting money down on the Saskatchewan Roughriders to beat the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the Labour Day Classic is illegal in Canada.
Kevin Waugh, the MP for Saskatoon-Grasswood, hopes to change that. He’s bringing forward a bill to legalize single-game sports gambling.
“What we have right now is $14 billion that we know of that is bet illegally in this country,” said Waugh. “That’s through bookmakers, criminal organizations like the Hell’s Angels and through websites like Bodog. They’re all offshore.”
Waugh points out that governments are not getting a dime from that revenue. He says a bill legalizing it could move about half of that into the pockets of governments.
“That means provincial jurisdictions can take that money and put it towards building things like hospitals and schools,” said Waugh.
The bill goes to a vote in the House of Commons in April. Waugh needs 170 votes for it to pass, which then would move on to the Senate.
Waugh is confident he’ll get those votes.
