The University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s hockey team is within striking distance of top spot in Canada West thanks to a weekend sweep, along with some favourable results elsewhere in the conference.
The Huskies beat the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds 3-2 on Friday, then followed that with a 5-2 win on Saturday at Merlis Belsher Place.
Goaltender Taran Kozun made 25 saves for the win on Friday. Travis Child started on Saturday, making 16 saves for the win in spot-start duties.
Huskies defenceman Justin Ball scored the first two U Sports goals of his career in Saturday’s win, helping to extend the team’s win streak to seven games. The Huskies have now won 15 of their last 16 games.
Adding to the intrigue was the University of Calgary Dinos weekend sweep of the conference-leading University of Alberta Golden Bears.
The Dinos beat the Bears 5-2 on Friday thanks to an early 3-0 lead in the first period. Goaltender Brodan Salmond turned in a 29-save performance, while Alberta goaltender Brendan Burke managed just 14 saves on the night.
Calgary finished up the home-and-home series with a 3-1 win over the Bears. Matt Berlin made 21 saves on the 24 shots he faced for Alberta.
Saturday marked the first Dinos weekend sweep of their provincial rivals since Jan. 30, 2016.
With four games to go Saskatchewan and Alberta are tied atop the Canada West standings, but Alberta holds the tiebreaker over Saskatchewan due to claiming one more win.
The Huskies travel to Manitoba for a weekend set against the Bisons before rounding out the regular season schedule with a home-and-home series against the Regina Cougars on February 1 and 2.
