No thanks, NFL.
The league is not going to have kickoffs during the pro bowl. Instead they are going to test a potential new rule to give teams two options after a scoring play.
They either give the other team the ball at the 25-yard line, similar to a touchback, or the team that scores can elect to possess the ball at their own 25 yard-line on 4th down, with 15 yards needed to get a first down.
If they get the first down, they keep the ball, if they don’t the opposition takes possession where the play ends.
Kickoffs are constantly described as the most dangerous play in the game. I like the XFL rule better, where the kicking team and the return team are lined up 5-yards apart down field and can’t move until the ball is caught. It eliminates hits at full speed but still allows big-play returns.
Taking kickoffs completely out of the game reduces the excitement of the game.
And it’s why again the CFL wins when it comes to exciting big plays in the kicking game.
