Two people are facing charges of assaulting police officers after an incident early Sunday in Abernethy.
The Fort Qu’Appelle RCMP said in a media release Monday that officers were dispatched to a residence Sunday at around 3 a.m., for a report of a domestic disturbance.
After arriving on the scene, officers found a 20-year-old woman with minor facial injuries. The Mounties’ release said that when officers attempted to arrest a 25-year-old man, he and the woman “became aggressive and assaulted both officers.”
A Mountie deployed his conducted energy weapon (CEW), but it reportedly wasn’t effective; she wasn’t injured. The man then tried to take the weapon away from the officer.
“Additional officers were summoned and the couple were taken into custody,” the release added.
The Mounties said an officer was taken to the Fort Qu’Appelle hospital for examination. He was subsequently released.
The woman is facing two charges of assaulting a peace officer and one charge each of domestic assault, forcible confinement, uttering threats and resisting arrest. The man is facing two counts of assaulting a peace officer, and one count each of resisting arrest, attempting to disarm a police officer and forcible confinement.
The couple appeared in Fort Qu’Appelle Provincial Court on Monday and was remanded into custody. A bail hearing is set for Thursday.
