We in Saskatchewan have our pro team — the Roughriders. It trumps all.
(By the way, my definition of a pro team is a team that’s in a league that has an over-the-air network television deal, where highlights are shown on Sportsnet Central and Sports Centre. That’s a pro team).
Then we have the Rush, which generates good crowds at SaskTel Centre. From there, we have our basketball, junior hockey and university teams that we follow.
Then we have those great events that happen all over our province, all the time. In Saskatoon, it’s time for the 52nd edition of the Bedford Road Invitational Tournament.
There will be a noticeable absence in one of the country’s best high school basketball tournaments in 2020. Kelly Bowers — athlete, teacher, planner and administrator — passed away in September after nearly five decades of involvement with BRIT. He will be honoured this year, and he will be missed.
The show must and will go on, but it’ll take some time for it to be the same without Kelly around.
