Weyburn is home to Canada’s best wedding DJ.
Richy Roy recently received the honour from the International Wedding Awards Association, which recognizes people in the wedding industry worldwide.
Roy says DJs are no longer just guys who push play.
“There’s a group of DJs throughout North America that are really trying to change the wedding industry from a DJ perspective. We find it’s our job to help the bride and groom create these special moments that they are going to be able to remember forever,” He explained.
Roy said after one or two weddings DJs realize guests are looking to them to control the flow of the event.
“We put in about 40 hours worth of work with our clients before we even get to the wedding part. We sit down and we go through everything step by step,” he said. “On the day of, on top of all of that, DJs have their own special things that they bring to the table that really surprise the bride and group to add that extra flare.”
Roy was a magician when he decided to switch to DJing after attending several weddings.
“I ended up going to see nine or 10 very poor performing wedding DJs and I looked at my wife and said ‘honey, I think I could do this’.”
There could be more awards in the not-so-distant future for Roy. He’ll find out in about six months if he is the world’s top DJ.
