The road to Melville for the 2020 provincial women’s curling playdowns has changed, but six rinks in Saskatchewan already know they will be there.
On Wednesday, CurlSask announced six pre-qualifying rinks. Those include Saskatoon’s Sherry Anderson, who won the provincial championship five times (most recently in 2018) and reigning champion Robyn Silvernagle.
Regina’s Michelle Englot, Lorraine Schneider and Amber Holland along with Moose Jaw’s Penny Barker round out the qualifiers.
For the playdowns in January, 12 teams will battle through a triple-knockout format for the provincial championship.
The remaining six spots will be filled through the Viterra Challenge in Unity from Dec. 13-15 and the Last Chance qualifiers in Estevan from Jan. 3-5.
In 2019, Silvernagle defeated Anderson for the provincial title in Humboldt. The playdowns featured a nine-team round robin followed by a Page playoff.
The winners of the provincial championships will move on to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts, Feb. 15-23 in Moose Jaw.
On Sunday, Curling Canada announced that the winners of both the Scotties Tournament of Hearts and the Tim Hortons Brier would receive equal payouts of $105,000 for winning the national championships.
