A Saskatoon accountant was one of 39 recipients of the Order of Canada presented by the Governor General Julie Payette, on Thursday, November 21, 2019.
Shelley Brown, former senior partner of Deloitte Canada, was this years only inductee from Saskatchewan.
The Order of Canada is part of a three-tiered system of merit that is awarded to people, in every field, who demonstrate the orders motto, desiderantes meliorem patriam, that means “they desire a better country.”
Brown, who has been called a trailblazer for women in accounting, said she isn’t exactly sure how her name was nominated for this, but she is honoured to be included.
“It’s an incredible honour. Particularly when I look at the accomplishments of the individuals that were also present at the ceremony in Ottawa, an incredible group of people so it is a real honour to be included among that very esteemed group,” she said.
Brown said it was “pretty cool” to be included with and on the same stage as some of the other recipients that included actors Donald Sutherland and William Shatner.
According to Brown, women are still under-represented in leadership roles in the accounting profession.
“I think there is lots of opportunities for Women to advance and take on leadership roles in this country,” she said, before giving advice to women who are currently in the accounting business.
“I think that you can accomplish anything you set your mind to if you set your goals and continue to work towards those goals. And don’t be discouraged by failure or road blocks that might be put in your way. I think that you just need to continue moving forward and working towards your goals.”
