Sorry, Rider Nation, you’re going to have to find something new to chirp back at Bombers fans, because 1990 doesn’t work anymore.
But I hope there was some tinge of good sportsmanship and maybe even a touch of joy for a long suffering rival fan base.
There was for me. I made sure to congratulate Zach Collaros, who persevered and came out a champion. Two former Riders coordinators, who I think are some of the best humans in the game in Paul LaPolice and Richie Hall, win together again like they did in 2007 with the Riders. Both of whom dealt with tragedy this year with the death of Paul’s mom and Richie’s brother during the season.
Or how about Patrick Neufeld, from Regina, traded a few months before his hometown team won the 2013 Grey Cup. Neufeld, heartbroken he wasn’t on the team couldn’t bear himself to watch it.
Now, he’s got his championship, putting in six seasons in Winnipeg for it to finally pay off.
Winnipeg dominated from start to finish and left no question who the best team was in 2019, despite incredible ups and downs.
The Bombers were resilient, like their fans, who have been waiting a long time to party on Portage and Main.
