The CFL coaching carousel rumours are starting already and the off-season is barely three days old for some teams.
It started with Rick Campbell choosing to leave the Ottawa Redblacks with an apparent relationship strain between him and general manager Marcel Desjardins.
Instantly the link between Campbell and the Edmonton Eskimos springs up as they’re led by the former assistant GM in Ottawa, Brock Sunderland. The obvious connection between Campbell and the Eskimos runs deep.
So where would Jason Maas go? Back to Ottawa? Join Ed Hervey and Mike Reilly in B.C.? Oh, and then there is talk Mike O’Shea, if he’s out in Winnipeg, moves back to Toronto. That could leave the door open for Paul LaPolice to be promoted in Winnipeg.
God bless the CFL and its tiny circle of coaches and the rampant gossip. It’s a bit nuts that Maas and O’Shea haven’t even played a playoff game and they’re already in the rumour mill.
But never be skeptical of rumours this time of year. Many were quick to discount the Chris Jones-to-Saskatchewan rumour when the Eskimos were playing in the Grey Cup in 2015.
As always, where there’s smoke, there’s fire.
