A Saskatoon lawyer is coaching people to deal with their own legal affairs.
Jodie Stark with Stark Solutions gives advice to people representing themselves in court or going through issues like rental disputes and litigation.
She told Gormley it’s a great solution for people who can’t afford to hire a lawyer.
“About 50% of Canadians are going to face a significant legal issue in their lifetime, and most middle class residents can not afford to pay the high cost of full service legal representation,” she said.
She pointed to a study that showed the average legal dispute costs at least $12,000. Legal coaching, on the other hand, would run you less than $1,000 for the same case.
However, it’s not a one size fits all approach.
“Services like legal coaching are designed to help those who are going to manage their own legal affairs, and that can vary, how much they need assistance.”
She thinks it’s also a good way to guide people through the legal process with a level head.
“The job of the coach… is to set out the goals at the outset, so that when things start to veer off course or emotion starts to get in the way… the coach’s job is to get them back in line at what it is that they were setting out to do.”
