Cody Fajardo’s new two-year extension has made general manager Jeremy O’Day very popular in Saskatchewan. Fans here like the fact that Fajardo is talking about being a franchise quarterback.
On the heels of a 2015 Grey Cup win in Edmonton, Chris Jones was given the keys to the Riders. When former franchise quarterback Darian Durant didn’t lead the Riders to a championship, Jones moved on to Kevin Glenn for 2017. Then in 2018 he turned to Zach Collaros. Rotating quarterbacks in an effort to get to the Grey Cup each and every season didn’t pan out.
The new man in charge, O’Day, appears to see the value in a franchise quarterback. If for some reason the Riders don’t get to or win the Grey Cup in 2019, fans I talk to still like the direction of this team.
It’s a good move to try to build a long-term contender that can, in the future, win a Grey Cup. This is better than trying to find a different hot hand at quarterback year in, year out.
