There will be two new faces representing Saskatoon in the House of Commons.
Conservative Brad Redekopp beat the incumbent, Sheri Benson of the New Democrats, in Saskatoon West in a race that was close throughout the night Monday.
Redekopp said he thinks voters were sending a message to the Liberals.
“I think it’s a very strong statement against the Liberal government. It’s strong support for the Conservatives and just reflects the unhappiness we sensed at the door against Justin Trudeau,” said Redekopp.
Benson agreed that voters seemed to be disappointed.
“At some level I think it was a bit of a protest vote,” she said. “Some of that polarization raised between the Liberals and the Conservatives — I certainly heard it on the doorstep. (I heard) a lot of disappointment and I think people decided that’s how they were going to show their disappointment.”
Saskatoon-University also has a new Member of Parliament.
Corey Tochor, who had been a Sask. Party MLA, will now serve federally.
“We need to hold Justin Trudeau to account and especially through his ethical lapses that will come shining through in committee, and we’ll be able to hold him to account because they don’t have the majority anymore,” said Tochor.
In Saskatoon-Grasswood, Kevin Waugh won a second term. He said having all 14 Saskatchewan ridings now Conservative will help.
“This province depends on farming. We’ve got issues with China on canola, we’ve got pulse issues, we have the hog issues and right now Saskatchewan will be heard loud and clear by all 14 of us in Ottawa,” Waugh said.
Kelly Block resoundingly won her fourth term in Parliament on Monday night. After winning re-election in the Carlton Trail-Eagle Creek riding, Block also said she was happy to see Saskatchewan go completely Conservative blue.
“I’m just really glad to see that all of our colleagues here in Saskatchewan were successful in their campaigns,” said Block.
