Today, I use this time and space to send out birthday wishes.
I don’t get the sense that George Reed thinks of himself as someone who is famous, but one of the best running backs in CFL history is so humble, which makes him an even bigger star.
I’ll never forget visiting with Reed after Darian Durant had led the Riders to the 2013 championship. The 1966 Grey Cup MVP told me that he thought the 2013 Grey Cup win was the biggest game in Saskatchewan Roughriders history.
There was no bitterness and no saying that the game was better in his day. He realized what a home-field win meant in a century of Saskatchewan football.
When speaking with George Reed at events, I’ve noticed that he is the person who most people in this province want their picture with. He’s happy to do it. (Yes, I am one of many that have had my picture taken with Mr. Reed.)
He is Rider royalty. Happy 80th birthday to a man we focus in on today, who is always quick to put the focus on others.
