The Saskatchewan Roughriders’ defence continued its run of dominance by forcing five turnovers as the Green and White overpowered the Ottawa Redblacks en route to a 40-18 win at Mosaic Stadium on Saturday.
The defence, which didn’t force a single turnover in its first meeting in Ottawa on June 20, intercepted Redblacks quarterback Dominique Davis three times in the first quarter. Defensive back Nick Marshall, defensive back L.J. McCray and linebacker Derrick Moncrief found themselves on the other end of Davis’ errant pass attempts.
Defensive end Charleston Hughes forced and then recovered a fumble in the third quarter. Defensive back Louchiez Purifoy stripped Redblacks quarterback Jonathon Jennings of the football in the fourth quarter and recovered it himself.
Running back William Powell scored twice and rushed for 70 yards in the win.
Quarterback Cody Fajardo completed 24 of 36 pass attempts for 241 yards and a touchdown. He had gone two games without tossing an aerial score. Wide Receiver Naaman Roosevelt caught his first touchdown pass of the season.
Fajardo also rushed in a touchdown.
The Roughriders have now won five in a row and sit at 6-3. Ottawa drops to 3-7.
