Tennis is becoming a Canadian sport.
Quite a feat, considering there’s a generation of Canadians who watched tennis sparingly, wondering if Carling Bassett would ever make a women’s final or why Daniel Nestor’s doubles prowess didn’t transfer to singles.
Bianca Andreescu is one of the reasons. She’s the first Canadian woman to win Canada’s biggest tennis tournament in 50 years. She accomplished the feat with her traditional grit and drama, plus the grace she showed when Serena Williams withdrew from the Rogers Cup final because of a bad back.
It’s unfortunate Genie Bouchard has fallen by the wayside and won’t be seriously challenging Andreescu. But in the men’s competition, veteran Milos Raonic is being chased by Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov.
For that generation used to watching Europeans and Americans like Steffi Graf, Martina Navratilova, Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors and Boris Becker dominate their sport, it’s fun – and different – watching Canadians finally earn their way onto the championship courts.
