When I buy football tickets, I’m paying to see two teams play. Not just the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
So it dismays me when the “Halftime Highlights” show only the home team’s good plays. It always looks like the Roughriders are leading 42-0, so I don’t watch the huge video screen at intermission.
From my seats in Mosaic Stadium, I also want to watch the replays I customarily see for free when I’m at home enjoying TSN’s telecasts. The Roughriders don’t allow that. For their last game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, a disputed pass-interference penalty against the Roughriders was edited to show the pass and the catch, but deleted the possible penalty. The technology was available, but an important part of the game was hidden from the paying customers.
Other CFL teams do the same thing; it’s a home-field advantage for video reviews. But if the free, televised product is more enjoyable, if it shows way more of the game from both sides of the field, people may stop buying tickets and stay at home to see the whole contest and the important replays.
Hmmm. Isn’t attendance down across the CFL?
