“It’s easier to burn a bridge than build one.”
I really like that saying because it speaks to relationships and culture. Two damaging words or a quick damaging action can happen from one person to another, and to repair that strained relationship takes much longer than the action itself.
There have been reports that Marcus Stroman didn’t hold back when learning of his trade from Toronto to the Mets. Stroman has openly brought into question the professionalism of the Jays franchise, and reportedly caused a commotion in the Jays’ clubhouse on his way out. Stroman was apparently unhappy he wasn’t traded to a contender.
Now that Stroman has left, following an uneasy departure, manager Charlie Montoyo and up-and-coming stars like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. have to create a culture of team and winning in Toronto.
It will take more time to build the team up than it did for Stroman to tear it down with his words and actions before he left.
