Just when the Saskatchewan Roughriders were settling into normalcy …
Boom! Defensive line coach Mike Scheper was fired by the CFL team, two days before a rematch against the B.C. Lions. It’s a huge game, capping a home-and-home set against a team the Roughriders can virtually eliminate as a contender by completing the series sweep.
The Roughriders looked pretty good in the latter stages of the opening game against B.C., once they got back the momentum they had lost during their bye week. Defensive end Charleston Hughes had three sacks, 10 tackles and two forced fumbles. Scheper has spent the past three-plus seasons on staff coaching the defensive line, even though his first stint was coaching the offensive line.
The defence was rounding into shape under first-year co-ordinator Jason Shivers. Indeed, the whole team was responding to new head coach Craig Dickenson, backup quarterback Cody Fajardo and the ever-changing personnel along an injury-ravaged offensive line. Good teams overcome adversities and win the games they’re supposed to win. Saturday will show if the Roughriders can be a good team.
