The City of Saskatoon has introduced new 30-kilometre-per-hour speed limit signs in some work zones.
The new limit will mostly be used for temporary work lasting a day or less.
Staff Sgt. Patrick Barbar of the Saskatoon Police Service said the police will focus on enforcing the speed limit in those zones.
He said the fine for going 50 km/h in a 30 km/h zone is $190. The ticket goes up by $2 for every kilometre per hour above that.
Barbar said drivers should be on the lookout for all construction.
“Whether or not there is a sign, slow down, move over, give people a chance to work on the side of the road,” he said.
According to Barbar, one worker has been injured in the past two years from a work zone collision. Barbar said that injury wasn’t the only reason for the new rules.
“Road workers are experiencing a lot of close calls, coming into contact with traffic. So, the decision was made to introduce these speed signs,” he said.
