A sprawling home on Saskatoon’s riverfront has set a new record for being the most expensive house listed in the city.
The property at 934 Saskatchewan Cres. East generated a buzz among real estate agents after it was posted Wednesday with an asking price of $4.6 million — making it the highest price ever listed on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) within city limits.
Built in 2014, the 4,684-square-foot house showcases sprawling views of the South Saskatchewan River and Broadway Bridge while also housing an elevator and “high-end” finishes throughout.
Listing agent Clark Dziadyk said the home currently belongs to a retired Saskatoon business couple who found they were spending too much time away from the city to justify keeping their dream home.
“It just didn’t really make sense to have a home of this size sit empty,” Dziadyk told 650 CKOM on Thursday.
He said the couple originally bought the property and bulldozed the existing home several years before, after discovering a sinking foundation.
They intended their new home to be their base for the rest of their lives, incorporating wide hallways and an elevator to accommodate elderly mobility issues.
“This home was never meant to be sold,” Dziadyk said, noting the high price tag will mean a limited pool of potential buyers.
The luxury home has piqued the interest of several people in the community, though, many marvelling at the quirky modern art and luxury features of the house.
One item catching many people’s eyes, Dziadyk said, was a bathtub in the master bedroom. It’s shaped like a high-heeled shoe.
He said the owners caught sight of the bizarre bath online while the home was being built, and decided to import it from Milan.
“I don’t think it’s a tub you’re going to use every day,” Dziadyk said. “(It’s) moreso an art piece and a conversation piece to have some fun with.”
As for who is going to buy the home, with a high price tag and annual property taxes of over $19,000?
“Good question,” Dziadyk said.
