Uber has officially landed in Saskatoon.
While the ridesharing service has operated in Saskatoon for roughly five months, an agreement has been reached to extend its services to airport property.
Uber joins Rel8 as ridesharing apps that can pick up passengers from Saskatoon’s John G. Diefenbaker International Airport.
C.J. Dushinski, vice-president of business development at the airport, doesn’t think the average person will notice the difference on the curbs outside the building.
“I think it’s a great addition, especially for international passengers, or passengers that aren’t necessarily familiar with Saskatoon, who are flying in and (are) used to taking Uber in other cities,” she said hours after Uber began fully operating.
Previously, ridesharing companies could only drop off passengers, as taxi companies held exclusive pick-up rights from the airport.
While Rel8 and Uber are the two services picking up customers, Dushinski noted that all ridesharing apps legally operating in Saskatoon have been in contact with the airport authority for similar agreements.
Taxis will continue to operate as normal. The clear distinction is that taxis have access to the new commercial curb, while Uber and other services will remain on the outer public curb.
“It’s just another option, I would say that taxis are pretty much status quo. They still maintain control of the taxi stand and the taxi queue,” Dushinski said.
The airport has secured an area for ridesharing users. Signs will direct people to the public area outside Door 1.
