Dates have been set for a public inquest into the 2016 death of Joshua Megeney.
The 28-year-old Medicine Hat man died Oct. 6 of that year following an eight-hour standoff with Saskatoon police.
The incident occurred when police responded to a break-in at an Avenue Q North home. According to police, officers entered the Mount Royal-area home and found Megeney holding a gun.
Police said officers fired gunshots after making initial contact with Megeney, but it’s still unclear whether he was shot by police.
Officers re-entered the home later that day and found Megeney’s body behind a locked and barricaded door.
The purpose of the inquest is determine a medical cause of death. The jury can also make recommendations to help prevent similar deaths in the future.
Coroner Alma Wiebe will preside at the inquest, which is scheduled for June 24-28 at Saskatoon Court of Queen’s Bench.
