30 – The federal government’s $595-million five-year plan to help out struggling journalism organizations is being criticized, particularly due to the involvement of Unifor, Canada’s largest private sector union representing more than 300,000 workers, in the independent panel deciding who qualifies for the cash. Unifor National President Jerry Dias has described himself as “Andrew Scheer’s worst nightmare,” prompting some to say the process is already partisan and biased, and will favour the Liberals during the 2019 election. Dias joins Drew now to address some of the concerns.

00 – SGI is launching a new campaign today simply called “Distracted Driving Kills.” One of the spokespeople for the campaign is Sandra LaRose, who lost her 17-year-old daughter Kailynn in August of 2018 when her vehicle collided with a train. Sandra believes her daughter was distracted by her phone at the time of the crash, and since her passing has become an advocate against distracted driving. As part of the SGI campaign, she voices a 60-second commercial warning others of the potentially tragic consequences of being distracted behind the wheel. LaRose joins Drew now to talk about her story and distracted driving.

00 – Activists have spent years advocating for Lucy, the 42-year-old lone elephant at the Edmonton Valley Zoo, in an attempt to get her moved to a warmer climate and arguing the Edmonton weather and her isolation are not in the animal’s best interests. Animal rights groups recently tried to force the courts to review Lucy’s conditions, but their attempt fell flat largely due to a legal technicality that doesn’t allow outside groups to ask the courts to review a captive animal’s conditions. Peter Sankoff, a U of A law professor and animal rights law expert, joins Drew now to discuss the case and why Lucy may remain “the coldest elephant in the world.”
LIVE: Peter Sankoff, lawyer, law prof., and animal rights law expert.
00 – Golden State forward Draymond Green recently spoke to a reporter about the importance of believing in your own greatness, and how you’ll never achieve it without the right mindset and confidence in your own success. Drew discusses the importance of the “greatness mindset” and how it’s helped a number of athletes on the road to stardom.
