Saskatoon fire investigators are pointing to a cigarette left in a planter on a back deck as the likely cause of a blaze that seriously damaged a pair of homes.
Crews were called out shortly before 7 p.m. Tuesday after multiple calls to 911 reporting the fire on Whelan Crescent, located on the western edge of the city in the Confederation Park neighbourhood.
Firefighters arrived to find both houses on fire, with another two homes threatened by the flames.
Extra fire trucks were called in to help get the blaze under control within about half an hour.
Crews searched both houses and confirmed no people were inside. A dog died after being found in one of the homes.
Damages were estimated at $750,000.
