An inmate on remand has died at the Saskatoon Correctional Centre.
Ministry of Corrections and Policing spokesman Drew Wilby said paramedics were called to the jail around 2 a.m. Tuesday after guards found the man unresponsive in his cell.
“When he was found 911 was immediately called and EMT and police responded to the facility. Unfortunately that individual was pronounced deceased,” Wilby said.
Wilby said it was premature to release a cause of death, but ruled out foul play.
Police and the coroner are investigating the circumstances of the death. Wilby said an internal review is also underway.
“This investigation will look to make sure those cell checks were conducted as they were supposed to and that due diligence was done.”
This is the second death at the jail since November.
