As the warmer, dryer conditions of spring settle into Saskatchewan, volunteer firefighters are getting ready for grass and wildfire season.
Saskatchewan Volunteer Firefighters Association President Doug Lapchuk told 650 CKOM’s Brent Loucks on Wednesday that it’s hard to predict when things will get busy.
“It’s always a challenge because you never know when (fire season) is going to come and, being a volunteer force, we’re not always ready,” he said.
Lapchuk admits personnel is sometimes an issue during busy times.
“We’re usually ready with equipment, but it’s usually a question of personnel,” he said.
For people interested in becoming a volunteer, Lapchuk explains there are no province-wide standards at this time.
“Generally speaking, the biggest requirement is you have to have a sense of commitment to your community and a willingness to be there to help your fellow man,” he said.
The association has proposed guidelines as to some of the minimums to keep volunteers safe, according to Lapchuk.
Twice a year, the association hosts training courses. The next session is scheduled for April 26-28 in Pilot Butte.
“They’re going to learn everything from basically firefighter kindergarten to water rescue to instructor training, auto extrication and so on,” Lapchuk said about the course.
