Regina Folk Festival aims to cut garbage with industrial composter

Regina Folk Festival organizers are hoping this year’s event will be the greenest one yet.

Festival CEO Sandra Butel said they are optimistic a lot of the waste produced at this year’s event can composted.

“(We’re) working to decrease the waste we produce by 90 per cent,” she said.

Butel said organizers found a company in Saskatchewan with the ability to compost lots of waste.

“We managed to find a supplier in Saskatchewan that has an industrial composter, so we can compost 90 per cent of the garbage that is produced on site, rather than putting all of that in the land fill,” she said.

The composting effort is possible this year with the help of extra volunteers.

“We recruited extra volunteers so that we have extra sorting stations so that we put things in the right place,” she said.

Seventy-five volunteers will manage the waste over the weekend; the festival starts Friday night in Victoria Park.

This year’s event features over 30 different bands and includes four daytime stages and a children’s stage.

Some of the highlighted musical guests include Sam Roberts, The Cat Empire, Ricky Skaggs and The Mavericks.
