The last line of a Wednesday Canadian Press story had to be a little disheartening to Blue Jays fans. It read “Marcus Stroman and Aaron Sanchez are expected to serve as anchors of the starting rotation for the rebuilding Blue Jays this season.”
2019 will be another year of rebuilding. One knew the Blue Jays were rebuilding last year when media stories turned to what Vladimir Guerrero Jr., was doing in Buffalo and New Hampshire. That story offered more encouragement than the Jays’ 73-win season of 2018.
Jose Bautista and Josh Donaldson were “going yard” regularly four years ago, while David Price and Mark Buehrle provided a formidable presence on the mound. This season, Stroman and Sanchez are the vets, while we wait to see who will swing the big bat.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m looking forward to opening day in two weeks, but with lowered expectations from just a few short seasons ago. In 2015 and 2016, the start of baseball season meant the push for a playoff spot. Now it just means the start of spring and occasionally watching another year of rebuilding.
