This is a CFL off-season like no other.
Four of the nine teams in this league will have a new head coach in 2019, which makes picking a champion at this time of year tougher than usual. Of the teams that have new coaches, Toronto may have a bit of an inside track. Corey Chamblin has been a head coach before, and is a Grey Cup champion.
Head coaches, both new and returning, will be at the mercy of their General Manager’s next month. Coaching is important, but getting a great quarterback is a must. In a year where Mitchell, (if he returns) Reilly, Harris and Jennings are just some of the free agent quarterbacks out there, it’s almost impossible to pick a favourite.
There is a reason why a CFL quarterback earns 10 per cent of an entire team’s salary. In three-down, wide-field football, your team is only as good as its pivot.
Until quarterbacks find their landing spots, there is no way to even guess how 2019 may play out.
