A Saskatoon jury convicted Robert Major late Thursday evening, finding the Langham, Sask. man guilty on three counts each of dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, criminal negligence causing death and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.
The guilty verdict stems from a crash on Feb. 22, 2016, during which Major was driving a Dodge Ram truck that crashed into a semi at the intersection of Highway 16 and Range Road 3083.
The crash killed two of his sons, 9-year-old Theodore Cardinal and 4-year-old Brenden Major, and his girlfriend, 26-year-old Kimberly Oliverio.
During his Court of Queen’s Bench trail, Major said he was looking for a stop sign at the intersection in the moments leading up to the collision; he denied the allegation that he was using a cell phone prior to the crash.
The Crown argued that Major was negligent, that he chose to speed in the dark on a slippery road, carrying seven passengers that weren’t wearing seatbelts.
His defence lawyer, Mark Brayford, argued the crash wouldn’t have happened, had a stop sign at the intersection not been knocked down at the intersection’s corner.
Major will be sentenced Friday in Saskatoon’s Court of Queen’s Bench.
