The NHL’s St. Louis Blues put out a video this week showing how a program set up in honour of a Saskatchewan woman who died of leukemia has helped save a life.
Mandi Schwartz died in 2011 at the age of 23. Her brother Jaden now plays for the Blues.
The Schwartz family set up bone marrow donation registries at Blues games in Mandi’s honour through a group called Be The Match.
One of those registration drives led Blues fan Michael Hellrich, now 38, to sign up. He would eventually be matched with Regan Brown, an Alabama teenager who began treatment for leukemia shortly after graduating high school.
On Thursday, the Blues released a video of Hellerich getting to meet Brown, alongside members of the Schwartz family.
Mandi Schwartz’s smile never faded as she battled leukemia. Now, thanks to her family’s fight to keep her legacy alive and a bone marrow registry at a #stlblues game, a life has been saved.
