It’s easy to see why Leaf fans didn’t care for Jake Gardiner’s on-ice performance on Monday night.
The 28-year-old, eight-year defenseman, was one of many Leafs that played poorly on home ice in a 6-3 loss to Colorado.
With the score 2-2 late in the second period, Gardiner just flat out lost a battle with Carl Soderberg which led to the Avalanche
taking a 3-2 lead.
Gardiner was booed by fans and benched for the final five and a half minutes of the middle frame.
After the game, Gardiner totally owned it by saying “it’s not something you want to hear, but fans are passionate and they want to win.”
There are many examples of athletes turning on their supporters when they boo, some of them in Toronto where hockey fans can be ruthless.
It would have been easy for Gardiner to push back, but he didn’t.
Gardiner’s performance on the ice wasn’t good.
His performance when addressing the fans through the media was spectacular.
