The Correctional Service of Canada has confirmed that an inmate who escaped from the Saskatchewan Penitentiary New Year’s Eve turned himself in over the weekend at a correctional facility in southern Alberta.
Steven Briggs, 24, turned himself in to staff members at Bowden Institution around 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
Briggs escaped from the minimum security unit at the Saskatchewan Penitentiary on Dec. 31. Briggs stole a truck belonging to Corrections to make his escape and was spotted driving the vehicle the next day in Yorkton.
Briggs was serving a jail sentence of seven years and three months for assault causing bodily harm, assault with a weapon, robbery, vehicle theft and possession of property obtained by crime at the time of his escape.
The CSC said it continues to investigate the circumstances around the incident.
