The Saskatchewan Rush have re-signed defenceman Mike Messenger to a new three-year deal just in time for Friday’s season opener.
The six-foot, two-inch, 220-pound Messenger is expected to be in the lineup as the Rush kick off their new season in Connecticut against the New England Black Wolves on Friday. The Rush are the defending champions in the National Lacrosse League after claiming last season’s title with a 15-10 win over the Rochester Knighthawks. The Rush have won the NLL championship three times over the past four years.
Messenger, a native of Surrey, B.C., finished last season by leading Rush defenders with a career high of eight goals. Head Coach Derek Keenan said he expects even more growth from the defender this year.
“It’s great to have Mike back and especially on a three-year deal,” Keenan said in a statement. “He’s an integral part of our team and will continue to grow into a bigger role.”
Although a dispute between the league and players delayed the opening of this season, the NLL and Professional Lacrosse Players’ Association reached a new five-year deal Nov. 24.
Tonight’s contest in Connecticut starts at 6:30 p.m.
