Saskatchewan New Democratic Party is losing a veteran member of its caucus.
Saskatoon Nutana MLA Cathy Sproule announced Thursday that she won’t see re-election and plans to retire from politics at the next provincial election in 2020.
“I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as an MLA and I look forward to pursing other opportunities,” said Sproule, who served as a lawyer for the federal government prior to public office.
NDP Leader Ryan Meili called Sproule a principled, passionate and articulate advocate for the truth.
“We are all better off for her involvement in our party and our province, and I wish her all the best in her future endeavours,” Meili said.
Sproule was first elected in 2011 and was re-elected in 2016. She’s held key portfolios as the opposition critic for finance, environment, justice, agriculture and the Global Transportation Hub.
Sproule said she looks forward to helping the party return to government.
“I believe strongly in the leadership of Ryan Meili and his vision to build a healthier province where everyone does better,” she said.
“I look forward to working alongside Ryan and the NDP team for the next two years and doing my part to elect Ryan as the next premier of Saskatchewan.”
