The two physical forces did have a number of exchanges prior to the second period hit which left Wilson shaken and out for the rest of the game.
After the game Caps coach Todd Reirden called it a “blindside hit.”
Washington’s coach is defending his player, which is what a coach should do, but it’s a tough stance to defend.
If you look at the video of Tuesday’s hit, Reaves is skating north-and-south, and Wilson is actually the player that is skating towards Reaves to make contact.
In the exhibition season, Wilson came across to put a hit on an unsuspecting St. Louis Blue Oskar Sundqvist. Both hits are on Youtube.
Again, a coach should have his players’ backs. However, I’m not sure that many can side with Reirden based on Tuesday’s hit, and Wilson’s history.
