Saskatoon inspector awarded for decades-long health streak

A Saskatoon police inspector was recognized on Nov. 23 for his impressive streak without taking a sick day.

Larry Vols received a long service award from the city after going 40 years without missing a day of work because of illness.

He told the Brent Loucks Show that there’s no secret to avoiding sick days.

“It’s a commitment to my employer, genetics and a combination of luck,” Vols said.

But he does take his health seriously.

“Certainly during my day, I try to get in my workout,” Vols said. “I think when you exercise you feel better.”

While he hasn’t missed any work, Vols admits he has gotten sick a few times over his 40-year career.

According to the inspector, it usually happens during his Christmas vacation or while on annual leave.

Vols hopes to keep the streak going until he retires and expects his career to continue for at least a few more years.

“It’s still fun for me, 40 years later,” Vols said fondly of his time with the Saskatoon Police Service. “It doesn’t seem like 40 years and every day is fun.”
