Saskatoon will mark Remembrance Day this Sunday with a number of services around the city.
The largest will be held at SaskTel Centre, which hosts the biggest indoor Remembrance Day service in Canada each year.
Brent Wigness, who chairs Saskatoon’s Citizen’s Remembrance Day Organizing Committee, told 650 CKOM it takes the efforts of countless people to put the ceremony together.
“Everybody joins together, whether it’s service personnel, clergy, all the Royal Canadian Legions, the army and navy and a lot of just regular community organizations.”
The program includes a military parade and wreath-laying ceremony. With as many as 1500 people participating at any one time, Wigness said the ceremony isn’t necessarily as choreographed as people might thing.
“We’re not able to have a practice, so we have to go out there and basically go as we have set up and, for the most part, it’s worked out pretty good.”
Wigness said this year’s ceremony will pay particular attention to the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War.
Doors open at SaskTel Centre at 9 a.m. Sunday. With thousands of people set to attend, everyone is encouraged to arrive early to ensure they can get parked and get seated ahead of the program, which starts at 10:30 a.m.
Elsewhere in the city, the North Saskatchewan Regiment will send a small detachment for a ceremony at the cenotaph outside City Hall. The Montgomery neighbourhood will also hold a ceremony at the cairn and memorial in Montgomery Park.
