Marc Trestman’s firing from Toronto should be of concern to CFL fans.
2018 was a year that the Argos would like to forget. I get it.
Trestman, one of the smartest men in pro football, had a number of personal issues to deal with in 2018. He also had a football team that lost its starting
quarterback early in the season.
I also get the sense that those who worked with him and above him crossed a line. While he tried to assess if Duron Carter would fit in to his teams plans, I believe that management expected Carter to play immediately.
From 2008 to 2012, Trestman’s CFL teams made six playoff appearances, four Grey Cup appearances and won three Grey Cup championships.
That kind of success will draw attention. There are 32 NFL teams, numerous high-paying US colleges, and start-up leagues in the XFL and Alliance of American Football that are looking for quality people. .
Trestman, who carries himself with quality and class, is great for the CFL. It’s a better league with Trestman involved. Hopefully there is a team north of the border that realizes that.
