Sorry Blue Jays fans, the rebuild is officially on in Toronto.
It doesn’t seem like all that long ago that the Jays were battling in big post-season games with players such as Donaldson, Encarncion, Bautista and J.A Happ. They are all gone.
At the end of the season, so too, will be manager John Gibbons. The team confirmed what many of us knew…he won’t be back.
Toronto’s brain trust, namely president Mark Shapiro, deserves credit for patience.
Shapiro was hired in August of 2015, yet realized that under Gibbons his team was in the throws of something big.
Under Gibbons, the Jays had ’89 and ’93 win seasons and advanced to the ALCS in both 2015 and 2016.
Despite being an Alex Anthopoulos hire, Shapiro and GM Ross Atkins, for the most part, left the contenders intact.
Now the Jays competitive cycle has run its course.
Here is hoping Shapiro and Atkins are as good at a rebuild as they were with leaving well enough alone.
