Her first win was at the 1999 U.S. Open. Her 23rd victory came last year at the Australian Open. That kind of dominance is extraordinary.
Serena is in the news this week because of a weekend meltdown during the U.S. Open women’s final when she demanded that chair umpire Carlos Ramos apologize to her for code violations. She called him a thief.
Following the match, Serena said she was taking a stand for women’s rights and women’s equality.
Sadly, that is what grabbed the headlines following Naomi Osaka’s first-ever Grand Slam win.
In 2009, Serena threatened to shove a ball down a female official’s throat. In 2011, she told female chair umpire Eva Asderaki that she was a hater and “ugly inside.” Then on Saturday she hijacked a win from Osaka by taking centre stage in the post game news conference.
Williams had a chance to help shine a light on a first-time female Grand Slam winner, but instead made the U.S. Open about her.
