At the start of the summer, Rylan McKenney got a kayak and quickly noticed how much trash filled the South Saskatchewan River and its banks.
He started picking up garbage as he travelled down the river.
“Every little bit helps,” McKenney said.
“Anytime you’re out for a walk I’d say pick up a thing or two (of trash) and it really adds up.”
To help clean up the water McKenney started the Saskatoon Community Cleanup Facebook page.
During the group’s first event, around 500 pounds of garbage was pulled from the water.
McKenney hopes to do it all again on Sunday, this time near the weir.
“Anyone can join I’ve got everything, I’m handing out buckets, bags and grabbers,” he told 650 CKOM.
Sunday’s clean up is set to run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
