RCMP make arrest after truck stolen with little girl inside

Saskatchewan RCMP have laid charges after a vehicle was reportedly stolen earlier this week with a little girl still inside.

Officers were called out just after 4:15 p.m.Tuesday  for a report of a truck stolen with a three-year-old girl still in the backseat in the town of Creighton, located about 550 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.

RCMP caught up to the truck as it crossed into Manitoba, headed toward the nearby town of Flin Flon.

The truck reportedly rear-ended another vehicle after having its tires blown out by a police spike belt near the community of Cranberry Portage, Man.

Police said the driver then got out and ran into the bush. Officers moved in and recovered the girl from the truck unharmed. She was later reunited with her mother.

While officers were getting the girl to safety, other RCMP members set up a perimeter and began searching for the suspect.

A police dog from the The Pas RCMP detachment later found the man hiding under a vehicle in an outbuilding. He was arrested and taken to hospital for treatment of a dog bite.

RCMP issued an update Wednesday saying the man had been transferred back to Saskatchewan, where he remained in custody.

Terrance Charles Nickerson, 42, of Medicine Hat, AB faces a number of charges including vehicle theft, kidnapping, resisting arrest and dangerous driving.

An update on Thursday noted Manitoba’s independent investigations unit would be reviewing the incident, because the suspect sustained injuries from both the dog bite and collision.
