Humboldt Bronco survivor out of coma, doesn’t remember crash

A Humboldt Bronco injured when the team’s bus crashed on April 6 is continuing his recovery in hospital after spending a month in a coma.

Layne Matechuk, 18, suffered a major brain injury, according to a statement released Friday by his family.

He was on the SJHL team’s bus when it collided with a semi truck near Tisdale, Sask. while headed to a playoff game in Nipawin.

Of the 29 people on the bus, 16 people died and 13 were injured.

The statement noted the defenceman from Colonsay, Sask. was awake, but unable to speak.

“However, each day, he gets a little stronger and we are getting signs from him about what he is thinking,” the family wrote.

Matechuk was transferred to Saskatoon City Hospital this week to continue his recovery process.

The family added it seemed Matechuk didn’t remember the crash.

“He doesn’t appear to know what has happened.”

In the statement, the family said they’ve been “overwhelmed” by support from friends and strangers.

But they noted they don’t have an easy path ahead.

“We wish we could tell you it’s getting easier. The reality is – it’s not. At this point, we are not sure when Layne will get to leave hospital. But, what we can tell you is that we believe he gets a little closer every day.”

They continued by saying they are holding onto the term “#believe” because it was what coach Darcy Haugan taught his players.

“We #believe the strength and determination that brought Layne success on the ice will bring him success in the months and years ahead. We ask that you continue to send your prayers and support to him – and to think of him,” the statement read.

“And most of all, we ask that you #believe with him and us.”
