Late Humboldt Broncos coach Darcy Haugan had what he called a “Core Covenant” for his players to see at Elgar Peterson Arena.
One of the points was to always give more than you take. Another was to treat all with respect and gratitude.
Who could have known Haugan and 15 others would be lost in a bus crash, leaving behind 13 others to remember those words.
The Broncos are the guests of the NHL to the awards show in Las Vegas Wednesday night.
During a packed media conference Tuesday in Nevada, Broncos forward Kaleb Dahlgren said the support has been “very, very, very generous.”
When I heard Kaleb speak, it was almost as if I heard his coach speaking through him. His thanks was genuine.
It struck me that there may be a lot of the coach’s influence in those words.
Wednesday night, Haugan is a nominee for the Willie O’Ree Community Hero Award.
Haugan lived by his “Core Covenant.” He gave young men the values that will make them great people in life.
That’s a prime example of giving more than you take.
